Māori Integrated Unit Plan

During Term 3, B3 will be working through various aspects of the Māori culture.

They will be learning about the vowels and consonants sounds; basic greetings and different ways of replying; and asking and answering questions such as:
Nō hea koe? (Where are you from) _______ ahau (I am from ____)
Ko wai taku ingoa? (What is your name) Ko _____ taku ingoa (My name is ____)

The students will be challenged to introduce themselves and two others to the class using the Māori language. Let's see if they can correct their own pronunciation!

We have discussed tikānga in class and applied to it to different areas of the school such as the classroom, library, gym, assembly, and playground. We now have a understanding of what this means.

We will be working through Te Ao Kori; which is a physical education unit focussed on Māori culture and various pasttimes. So far we have focussed on takaro ā-ringa (hand games) and are currently preparing our pois for some poi games. We still need to make our raku sticks and participate in some string games.

In Music/Dance we have focussed on waiata ā-ringa. We have been singing lots of waiatas and have been becoming experts by remembering the nga kupu (the words) to each waiata.

We now know the following waiatas:
1) A ha ka ma
2) Whakarongo Ake Au
3) Tēna Koutou
4) E Poi

and have 3 more waiatas to learn!

The students seem to be enjoying their learning experiences and are quickly correcting their own pronunciation and becoming confident to use the language inside and outside of the classroom. Ka nui te pai tamariki ma!
